Zealandia (Karori Sanctuary Trust) is Wellington's world-famous urban wildlife sanctuary, protecting some of New Zealand's rarest native species behind a pioneering predator-exclusion fence. The integrity of this fence is critical to the sanctuary's biosecurity and the survival of the extraordinary wildlife within it, and volunteer Fence Checkers play an essential role in keeping it secure.

This volunteer opportunity involves regularly walking a designated section of the fence on the outer perimeter, looking for anything that could cause a biosecurity breach, and submitting a report after each check. Volunteers commit to at least six months and are rostered to a specific day, completing their check at any time when there is sufficient daylight. This is a particularly great opportunity for people who live near the fence line.
