Te Rito Gardens, operated by Asert Tatou Development Trust in Porirua, is dedicated to empowering people with the practical skills, knowledge, and confidence to grow food and native plants sustainably, and to open doors to meaningful careers in horticulture. Reconnecting with the whenua through hands-on growing mahi supports personal development, community resilience, and the care of native taonga.

At this working nursery and garden, volunteers learn to source and germinate seeds, take cuttings, propagate plants, prune, make compost, and contribute to the conservation of native plant species. There are also opportunities to get involved in woodwork, mechanical repairs, and pest control. People with disabilities are warmly welcomed. The nursery and garden is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
