Awatea Community Garden is a community-led initiative on a sun-filled piece of whenua in Rānui Heights, Porirua East, shaped by a vision of food, community connection, and a return to the land. With a mission rooted in gardening education, sustainable food growing, and the decolonisation of whenua, aligned with the Maramataka, this is a place of belonging, purpose, and collective mahi.

Through the My Garden Spot programme, individuals, whānau, schools, and community groups care for their own section of the community garden, growing kai, learning new skills, and contributing to a healthier, more resilient Porirua East. Garden Spot Keepers tend their patch through weeding, planting, watering, mulching, and harvesting kai, at their own pace, in their own way. Seasonal working bees and community planting days offer further opportunities to connect with the hapori. No gardening experience is required, just a willingness to show up and grow something meaningful.
