Duties:
Freedom Philosophy Society is a charitable not-for-profit organisation of volunteers, delivering innovative philosophy courses into prisons across New Zealand. This volunteer opportunity gives people in prison the chance to engage in meaningful discussion and critical thinking, supporting personal growth, healing, and a reduction in re-offending.

This volunteer opportunity involves supporting the delivery of philosophy programmes at correctional facilities in the Wellington region, including the Hutt Valley and Rimutaka. You'll walk alongside participants on a path of healing and freedom, helping create a safe and affirming space where transformation can begin.

What you'll bring:

  • A calm, emotionally grounded presence
  • Commitment to consistency and discretion
  • Excellent listening skills, non-judgemental and dependable
  • Comfort working in structured environments and sensitive situations
  • A philosophically curious mind

You might be a great fit if you are:

  • Genuinely committed to supporting people through rehabilitation
  • Comfortable working within a custodial/prison environment
  • Reliable and able to commit to a minimum of 6 months for consistency
  • Available 3-4 hours per week on weekdays (flexible around your availability)

Days, Hours: Ideally 3-4 hours per week, on weekdays, though flexible around your availability. You'll attend scheduled prison sessions and commit to a minimum of 6 months for consistency.

Training Provided: No prior experience is required. What matters most is your supportive presence and ongoing commitment. You'll receive training on the philosophy programmes delivered into prisons, plus guidance on prison protocols, and be fully supported throughout your journey.
