Monday Morning Food Rescue Driver & Volunteer - Help Save Good Food from Going to Waste Are you passionate about reducing food waste and helping your local community? If so, this could be the perfect volunteer opportunity for you.
We are looking for a reliable and friendly volunteer to assist with our morning food rescue runs. This role plays an important part in ensuring perfectly good food is collected from local supermarkets and redistributed to community organisations that need it most.About the Role
Based in Grenada North, this role involves driving our refrigerated truck and collecting donated food from several supermarkets. You will depart from our warehouse at 7.00am and visit:
During each collection you will carefully check donated food to ensure it has not passed its Use By date. After checking the items, you will box the food, photograph it using a KCA phone, weigh the stock, and upload the details into our online system and Facebook.
At New World Churton Park, you will also collect any empty banana boxes and record the number collected. These boxes are reused back at our warehouse to store non-food items.
Once you return to the warehouse, our team will assist with unloading the empty banana boxes. The rescued food will then be placed into refrigeration, and the relevant agencies will be contacted using the KCA phone so they can collect the food allocated to them.
Key Duties
About Our Organisation Kiwi Community Assistance (KCA) is a charity that works with supermarkets, businesses and community groups across the Greater Wellington region to rescue surplus food that would otherwise go to waste. We also provide the necessities of life such as clothing, footwear, linen and homewares to assist over 8,000 people per month.
All stock is redistributed to local foodbanks and community organisations, helping families while also reducing landfill.
Volunteers are not permitted to take donated goods home. We ask for a minimum three-month commitment, however you will not be required to volunteer on public holidays as we are closed.
Benefits of Volunteering With Us
The Impact You Will Have
Every collection you complete helps ensure good food reaches people who need it rather than ending up in landfill. Volunteers in this role help rescue hundreds of kilograms of food that directly supports community organisations across Wellington.

Wellington has a mountain of surplus food going to waste, while many can't afford to feed themselves. Many local eateries would love to give this surplus away but we don't have enough boots on the ground to help us collect it all, and 3pm weekdays is a tough timeslot to recruit for. Just a couple of hours out of your week can make a huge difference in stopping good food going to waste.
Come by yourself or bring a buddy - no sign up required. This is a casual role, so you just come as often as you want. You will be paired up with an experienced volunteer, for your first few shifts.
We meet at The Free Store on Willis St around 2:45, Monday to Friday (not public holidays).
Accessibility: Need to be able to walk and push a trolley.
