Volunteer Porirua builds the capacity and capability of community and voluntary organisations throughout Porirua by connecting people with meaningful volunteer opportunities and supporting organisations to develop strong volunteer programmes.
About Volunteer Porirua | Te Puna Tautokotia
Volunteer Porirua Te Puna Tautokotia opened in central Porirua on 24 August 2001 (the first International Volunteer Year), our first branch outside of Wellington city. This was a timely development, as there was a real demand for volunteers in the Porirua region and the then-team wanted to acknowledged the expense of travelling to Wellington.
Working closely with local organisations, businesses, and volunteers, we help strengthen the community sector and create positive outcomes for Porirua communities.
Our focus is on collaboration, practical support, and long-term community impact. By helping organisations engage volunteers effectively and making volunteering more accessible, we contribute to a stronger, more connected Porirua.

Volunteering Opportunities in Porirua
Assist with Saturday brunch for elderly residents at a Porirua care facility, helping in the kitchen or dining room. 10 am – 11:30 am.
Answer calls at the Wellington Samaritans centre, providing calm and compassionate listening support. One 3-hour shift weekly, full training.
Help elderly residents with simple gardening tasks at a Porirua care facility. Flexible hours, RAT test required per visit.
Provide hands-on feeding assistance to elderly residents who need support at mealtimes at a Porirua care facility.
Perform for elderly residents at a Porirua care facility — music, song, comedy, or storytelling. Sessions typically 30–45 minutes.
Play piano for elderly residents at a Porirua care facility — singalongs, background music, or dedicated sessions. Flexible timing.
Patrol Porirua streets monthly for 3–4 hours, reporting suspicious activities and building positive community safety presence.
Organise monthly Komiti meetings, take minutes, manage correspondence, and participate in patrols for Porirua Pasifika Community Patrols.
Assist adults with disabilities in arts and crafts sessions at Whitford-Brown in Porirua, providing creative support and encouragement.
