About Volunteer Hutt | Te Awa Kairangi
As the only organisation in the Hutt Valley dedicated to both volunteerism and community sector development, Volunteer Hutt works alongside local groups to build stronger, more connected communities.
Led by Marcia Skinnon as a Kaupapa Māori organisation, Volunteer Hutt is committed to creating culturally safe and inclusive spaces that honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi. The exploration of tūao is central to our mahi, informing the way we support organisations, foster partnerships, and celebrate the contributions of tangata whenua and volunteers alike.
Through volunteer recruitment, professional development, organisational support, and community advocacy, we help local organisations thrive. Initiatives such as Te Aka Tūao demonstrate our commitment to innovation, collaboration, and strengthening community engagement across the Hutt Valley.

Volunteering Opportunities in the Hutt Valley
Provide babysitting for children of Shakti Wellington clients during appointments and programme sessions. Police vetting required, flexible hours.
Use your sign language skills to support refugee and migrant community members with communication barriers. Flexible time commitment.
Accompany and encourage a person living with a brain injury at the gym, supporting their fitness goals and inclusion. Flexible timing.
Deliver one-to-one English tutoring in a learner’s home in Upper Hutt for 1–2 hours weekly. Full training provided, 6-month commitment.
Join the Petone Community House Board, meeting 6–12 times per year. Diverse backgrounds and skills welcomed.
Volunteer in the HUHA boutique op shop in Pito-one, Lower Hutt, assisting customers and helping sort and display stock.
Facilitate a fortnightly Drop-In Coffee session for parents in Upper Hutt on Tuesday mornings. No experience needed, training provided.
Assist or lead holiday programme activities for tamariki in Upper Hutt during school holidays. Police vetting required.
Support the restoration of Christ Church Taitā 1854 Visitor Centre with building tasks. No qualifications required, flexible timing.
Skilled building work for the Christ Church Taitā 1854 Visitor Centre, including Gib board, plaster, insulation, and paving.
